Have Barcelona Changed Strategy…?

With the new season just around the corner it is a good time to have a look at Barcelona’s summer activity.

The most recent capture of Lucas Digne for €16.5 Million brings much needed competition for Jordi Alba’s left back position. Some will be happy with the signing of Digne however some will still be unsure about Digne’s credentials; after all this is a player that sat on the bench to see35 year old Patrice Evra, who’s best days are very much behind him, start all seven games ahead of himat the Euros for France.

Nevertheless, this singing, together with the €25 million signing of central defender Samuel Umtiti, €3.5 million buy-back of the promising Dennis Suarez and most notably the signing of Portugal star André Gomes for €35 million seems to have signalled a change of approach.

All four players are 22 years old and it raises the questions are Barcelona starting to buy young players on the way up?
In the last transfer window Barcelona bought 28-years-old Arda Turan and 25-year-old Aleix Vidal. Before that they signed Claudio Bravo 31, Jeremy Mattieu 30, Thomas Vermaelen 28, Luis Suarez 27 and Ivan Rakitić 26.

Since the signing of a 23-year-old Jordi Alba in 2012 Barcelona haven’t signed any young defender of note and haven’t signed a young central defender since Dymtro Chygrynskiy in 2009 who was sold after only one year.

It is important to note though that youth is not the only thing that matters and the four players must prove they are deserving of a place in the great Barcelona team… and what better place to establish themselves early on than in the Supercup Final against Sevilla.

It is certainly worth having a bet on them again this season. Visit betpromocode.co.uk to claim promo codes from a number of leading bookmakers. They will definitely be favourites again.

Looking ahead to 20th August, FC Barcelona take on Real Betis in what should be a great opening game. The Camp Nou will be at full capacity, and there will be an incredible atmosphere for the start of this exciting new season. Following this match the Club are then at Athletico Bilbao on 28th August.
