A second half Cristiano Ronaldo penalty set newly crowned champions Real Madrid up for a 2-1 win over Granada but the night belonged to Barcelona’s Lionel Messi who hit all...

A second half Cristiano Ronaldo penalty set newly crowned champions Real Madrid up for a 2-1 win over Granada but the night belonged to Barcelona’s Lionel Messi who hit all four goals in a 4-0 win over Espanyol to take his league total to 50 and set a new European record for league goals in a season.
There has been a party atmosphere in the Spanish capital following Real’s capture of their 32nd league title but it threatened to be dampened as they were heading for defeat until Ronaldo equalised an early Franco Jara goal, with spot-kick ten minutes from the end. Then in a dramatic finale an own-goal from David Cortes gave Jose Mourinho’s men the victory.
It took Ronaldo onto an impressive 45 league goals for the campaign but this was overshadowed by an unstoppable Messi who now has 50 as Barcelona swept aside their local rivals in Pep Guardiola’s last home match before he stands down at the end of the campaign.
Messi beat the record set by Dudu Georgescu for Dinamo Bucharest in the 1976-77 season.
It was an unfamiliar looking Real side as Mourinho gave a run out to players who have not been regulars in the side recently which included Ricardo Carvalho coming into defence and Nuri Sahin and Esteban Granero paired together in the centre of the pitch.
Granada, still looking to secure their own top flight status, took full advantage of their uncertainty as they took the lead after just four minutes through Jara.
The forward stole the ball off Marcelo midway through the Real half and ran through on goal before slotting the ball through the legs of reserve keeper Antonio Adan, standing in for Iker Casillas.
It could have got worse minutes later when Odion Ighalo had a strike which was blocked well by the keeper and then his follow-up was cleared off the line by Marcelo.
Real responded with a Ronaldo heading over and then Kaka, left unmarked, fired over inside the area but they remained exposed at the back. Marcelo was again called on to head away a Jara shot which was heading for the bottom corner.
As the first half wore on Real began to take more control of the game but with the game less end to end they also struggled to create clear-cut chances and Granada at the same time were happy to sit on their lead and counter-attack. Still shortly before the break Ronaldo again headed wide from close range.
Karim Benzema was inches away from equalising shortly before the hour mark with a strike from a tight angle which came back off the post and then Ronaldo shot at the keeper Julio Cesar instead of passing to Gonzalo Higuain.
Real did finally draw level from the penalty spot after a foul in the area on Ronaldo who dispatched the kick himself and then in the dying moments it was heartbreak for Granada with the own-goal by Cortes.
Barcelona were without the injured Gerard Pique and Alexis Sanchez while Xavi Hernandez was only fit enough for the bench. Seydou Keita kept his place in midfield and Pedro Rodriguez’s return to form in front of goal saw him start in attack.
Thiago Alcantara hit a weak shot before Barca took the lead through Messi’s free-kick after 12 minutes which clipped off the top of the wall and past keeper Cristian Alvarez.
The Espanyol shot-stopper also saved well from Keita and Andres Iniesta midway through the first half as the Barca players looked to give a winning send-off for Guardiola.
Messi scored his second from the penalty spot after 63 minutes following a handball in the area by Cristian Gomez and then completed his hat-trick with a clinical finish with 16 minutes to go.
There was still time for Messi to hit another again from the penalty spot after a foul on Sergio Busquets.
Valencia took control in the battle for third place with a 1-0 win over Villarreal while Malaga crashed 2-1 away to Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona’s hopes of winning a fourth successive league title appear to be dashed after their defeat by Real Madrid at the Nou Camp means that they are now seven points...

Barcelona’s hopes of winning a fourth successive league title appear to be dashed after their defeat by Real Madrid at the Nou Camp means that they are now seven points adrift with matches running out.
It was a make or break match and for once it wasn’t Barca’s night as they never managed to dominate the el clasico as they have done in recent meetings with Madrid.
Sami Khedira put Madrid after 17 minutes and while hope was raised mid-way through the second half when Alexis Sanchez put Barca back on level terms, within minutes Cristiano Ronaldo had got Madrid’s second and his 42nd goal of the season.
Barca do have the chance to respond almost immediately though with a crunch Champions League semi-final second leg with Chelsea just round the corner.
It was unusual to see Pep Guardiola starting with a three-man defence but it shows that he has lost a lot of confidence in Gerard Pique who has also been struggling with a niggling injury in recent weeks. Perhaps with Chelsea and the Champions League in mind, Cesc Fabregas was also on the bench along with Alexis Sanchez who was not fit enough for 90 minutes.
There was an early scare at the back for Barca with a Ronaldo header tipped over the crossbar but at the other end keeper Iker Casillas had to race off his line after a back-pass almost allowed in Dani Alves.
The warning signs were there with Benzema having a shot from the edge of the area saved but Madrid took the lead from corner when Valdes couldn’t gather a Pepe header and Khedira scrambled the ball home.
Casillas saved well to deny Xavi inside the area but Barca were not carrying their usual menace in attack with Messi looking quiet.
Guardiola’s men stepped up a gear though as the half progressed and unsurprisingly it was Messi who was the instigator, pinging the ball to the wings from his central position but the goal evaded them.
As the rain came down the title was slipping out of Barca’s reach and a woeful attempt from Tello which went well over the bar from 12 yards out did little to improve the atmosphere in the stadium.
Xavi had a shot from 25 yards which went a yard wide and then was taken off which was no real surprise as he wasn’t at his best and Guardiola wants him fresh for Chelsea.
The change was inspirational as Alexis coming on immediately grabbed the equaliser.
A Tello shot and then a Thiago shot were both blocked by Casillas who could do nothing about the follow up from Alexis who tucked the ball in from close range.
The reply was swift from Madrid on the counter-attack as Mesut Ozil found Ronaldo who took one touch and slotted the ball past the keeper.
A disappointing night for Barca and the question can be raised again why Guardiola insists on a three-man defence with the team never at its best playing this way.

Stuttering Real Madrid have Barcelona breathing down their necks after their La Liga lead was cut to just four points following a 0-0 draw with third-placed Valencia on Sunday.

Real started well with Cristiano Ronaldo hitting the post early on, but they were unable to maintain the impetus and Valencia also hit the woodwork in both halves through Ricardo Costa and Tino Costa.

Karim Benzema was denied by a double save from keeper Vicente Guaita as Real pressed late on but Valencia also had their chances with Jordi Alba denied in a one-on-one with keeper Iker Casillas.

Real have now drawn three of their last five games in the league and face a crunch few weeks where they play derby rivals Atletico Madrid and tackle Barcelona in El Clasico.

The champions, meanwhile, have hit form at the right time with their 4-1 victory over 10-man Zaragoza on Saturday, their ninth in succession.

That game also saw Lionel Messi become the first player in almost 40 years to score 60 goals in a single European top-flight season after he bagged a double.

Messi’s 23 goals from the last 12 games helped him arrive at the landmark figure, the first time since Gerd Muller scored 67 goals in the 1972-73 season for Bayern Munich.

With a minimum of nine games still to play in the league and cup, 24-year-old Messi has the German’s record well within his sights.

On Sunday, with Sergio Ramos suspended for Real Madrid, Raul Albiol was preferred to partner Pepe at centre half after a solid performance last weekend in the 5-1 victory over Osasuna.

Coach Jose Mourinho also once again chose all-out attack with Gonzalo Higuain and Benzema starting along with Mesut Ozil and Ronaldo.

Valencia coach Unai Emery picked a surprising lineup with several changes from the Europa League victory in mid-week over AZ Alkmaar including Roberto Soldado, who has been carrying a knock, on the bench.

The visitors were pressed back after a lively start from Real and Ronaldo had several shots from the edge of the area including a drive after seven minutes which came back off the post.

In response, Sofiane Feghouli offered a warning at the other end with a strike which went narrowly wide but with Ozil also teasing the defence, and Higuain making threatening runs, a Real goal appeared on the cards.

Guaita pushed away another Ronaldo strike from 18 yards and then a Higuain cross was just too high for the Portuguese to steer goalwards.

Gradually Valencia were coming more into the game though and the Real defence was looking hesitant, notably when Tino Costa was given time to shoot inside the area after 25 minutes and Casillas could only parry the ball to Ricardo Costa who headed against the post.

A well-organised Valencia were taking advantage of the gaps left in midfield and Casillas was called on again to make an important save from Feghouli.

Mourinho brought on Angel Di Maria for Higuain after the break to give Real better balance but they were lucky not go behind after 55 minutes when Valencia were again denied by the post, this time a powerful shot from distance by Tino Costa.

Di Maria had an effort stopped by Guaita before the shot-stopper did extremely well to deny Benzema twice from close range with ten minutes to go.

Casillas was kept busy making a good block from substitute Jeremy Mathieu and he also stopped Alba in his tracks inside the penalty area in a frantic finale.

Levante moved up to fourth after two goals from Valdo Lopes and Arouna Kone inside the first ten minutes gave them a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid who saw Joao Miranda sent off late on.

Fernando Llorente scored the only goal as Athletic Bilbao beat Sevilla 1-0 while Mallorca and Granada ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Lionel Messi became the first player in almost 40 years to score 60 goals in a single European top-flight season after a brace helped Barcelona come from behind to beat 10-man Zaragoza 4-1 on Saturday.

Messi’s 23 goals from the last 12 games has helped him arrive at the landmark 60 figure, the first time since Gerd Muller scored 67 goals in the 1972-73 season for Bayern Munich.

With a minimum of nine games still to play in the league and cup, 24-year-old Messi has the German’s record well within his sights.

Barca’s victory on Saturday also helped the champions slash Real Madrid’s lead to three points with Jose Mourinho’s side facing a tough April schedule, starting against third-placed Valencia on Sunday.

After that comes the Madrid derby against Atletico and the El Clasico showdown with Barca also to feature.

Relegation-haunted Zaragoza took advantage of a slow start from Barca with Carlos Aranda heading them in front in the 30th minute after earlier missing a penalty.

Carles Puyol brought Barca back on level terms six minutes later and then Messi hit a double towards the end of either half, the second from the penalty spot.

In injury time, Messi set up Pedro Rodriguez for the fourth.

“All we can do is keep going and see what happens in the matches still to play. We knew this would be a difficult game for the way that the opposition has been playing in the last month and the state of the pitch made it worse for both of us,” said Barca coach Pep Guardiola.

“Everyone does it to try and make it difficult for us but it also makes it hard for them as well.

“There are more fouls, the game is slower and there is more contact. They do it to all the pitches except San Mames (Athletic Bilbao), even the Bernabeu. In any case we have always won when they have kept the grass long.”

Zaragoza’s hopes of a comeback had been hit a minute before half time with the dismissal of Abraham Minero.

It was a new-look Barca side to that which beat AC Milan to qualify for the Champions League semi-finals in midweek with Gerard Pique missing through injury while Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets were rested.

That meant Alexis Sanchez and Pedro Rodriguez got a chance in attack.

Zaragoza, on a high after three straight wins saw them move off the bottom of the table, took the game to the champions.

Puyol and Javier Mascherano were struggling against the imposing Aranda who had his first chance after five minutes when he just failed to connect with a cross from Ruben Micael.

Again Aranda was heavily involved as Zaragoza won a penalty after 23 minutes.

He latched onto a cross from Ivan Obradovic with his effort coming back off the post, and then keeper Victor Valdes failed to get to the ball before Angel Lafita brought him down.

Valdes redeemed himself though by parrying a weak spot-kick from Aranda.

Barca were slowly getting into the game when Zaragoza took the lead through Aranda after a through ball by Pablo Alvarez.

That was the spur that Barca needed and at the other end Alexis had a shot from close range blocked by keeper Roberto Jimenez.

From the resulting corner, the visitors equalised after a howler from the shot stopper. Roberto dropped the cross at the feet of Puyol who slotted home gratefully.

Minutes later, Messi turned the game on its head making easy work of going round defender Paulo Da Silva before firing into the roof of the net.

Before half-time Zaragoza were reduced to 10 men following the expulsion of Abraham for a second yellow card.

Sanchez won a penalty five minutes from the end after a foul by Javier Peredes and Messi made no mistake from 12 yards. In stoppage time, Pedro finished off a pass from Messi to give them an emphatic scoreline.

Miguel Perez ‘Michu’ scored a hat-trick as Rayo Vallecano took a step closer to safety with a 6-0 thrashing of Osasuna.

Diego Costa, Emiliano Armenteros and Roberto Triguero ‘Tito’ were also on target and the visitors have now conceded eleven goals in two matches following their 5-1 defeat by Real Madrid last weekend.

Getafe added to bottom side Sporting Gijon’s problems with a 2-0 win thanks to goals for Nicolas Miku and Diego Castro while Espanyol came from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Real Sociedad.

A double by three-time world footballer of the year Lionel Messi inspired holders Barcelona to a fifth successive appearance in the Champions League semi-finals after a 3-1 win over AC...

A double by three-time world footballer of the year Lionel Messi inspired holders Barcelona to a fifth successive appearance in the Champions League semi-finals after a 3-1 win over AC Milan here on Tuesday in their quarter-final second leg clash and win by the same scoreline on aggregate.

Messi’s brace of first-half penalties took him to 51 Champions League goals – at 24 the youngest to achieve this landmark – and a total this season of 14 breaking the previous record held by himself and Ruud van Nistelrooy of 12.

Andres Iniesta’s well-taken goal early in the second-half wrapped up the match and they will face wither Chelsea or Benfica in the semi-finals as they bid to become the first team to retain the trophy since it became the Champions League in the 1992/93 season.

Antonio Nocerino had pulled a goal back for Milan to level briefly in the first-half but in the end there was no stopping Barcelona emulating the great Real Madrid side of the 1950′s in reaching five successive semi-finals.

The Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri and players hit out at the referee over the penalty decisions but Barca coach Pep Guardiola claimed that they were clear cut.

“They were two penalties, if you pull someone in the area then that is what happens,” said Guardiola.

“We deserved to go through and I was very happy with the performance for the way that we were able to control the game especially after the third goal.

“To have reached the semi-final for the fifth time is something special and shows the strength of the club. To achieve it for one or two years is excellent but to do it for five is really amazing.

“I feel the same about my players whether they had qualified for the next round or not because they have already achieved so much they do not need to do more to prove themselves to me.

“We were against a team with a lot of experience and prestige so it was never going to be easy and there were always going to be talking points but they were two penalties and we did not complain about the ones that weren’t given in the first leg.”

However Allegri felt that his side were unlucky.

“The penalties were decisive and the second which was very debateable. It is never easy to play against Barca but overall they deserved to win,” he said.

A fired up Messi, who has been the top scorer in the Champions League for the past three seasons but had only scored once before against Italian opposition, had three chances inside the first ten minutes.

He shot straight at the keeper from the edge of the area and then side footed wide after a delightful link up with Cesc Fabregas.

At the San Siro, Milan had looked composed and managed to disrupt Barca’s usual passing game but now they were looking edgy especially at the back.

One error after another led to Barca’s opening goal.

Massimo Ambrosini was dispossessed in midfield by Messi who tore into the area and then appeared to make the wrong decision in playing the ball back to Xavi.

Full-back Luca Antonini dispossessed the Spain international but then went through the back of Messi and the referee awarded the penalty which the Argentine despatched into the corner.

Milan eventually began to settle and scored with their first real chance.

Robinho went on a jinking run and found Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the edge of the area, who picked out Nocerino and he calmly slid the ball past keeper Victor Valdes.

Milan had got themselves back into the game but then found themselves chasing the game again before the break, after another penalty was signalled for a shirt tug by Alessandro Nesta on Sergio Busquets as a corner was being delivered.

Messi stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way from 12 yards.

Still Milan knew that a goal would put them through to the next round but their task was made a lot tougher after 53 minutes when Iniesta put Barca further ahead.

Messi was again involved with his shot blocked by Philippe Mexes and the rebound unluckily for the defender ran to Iniesta who slotted home clinically from close range.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola believes it is crucial their forward line is on song against AC Milan as he fully expects the Serie A leaders to score at the Nou Camp in their Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday night.

“I’m pretty sure that they are going to get a goal and so it is down to us to try and find the way to create chances because if they have to defend with eight players in the penalty then they will do,” said Guardiola.
The defending champions cruised through the last round with a 7-1 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg at the Nou Camp with Lionel Messi scoring a record five goals in the process, but this tie is now evenly balanced after a 0-0 draw at the San Siro last week.
Milan defended solidly and were able to break up Barcelona’s quick passing through the midfield. They now know that a score draw will see them through to the semi-finals.
“We are now in the latter stages of the competition and this is a key match which we have to win. We need to find a way to score goals and so we will have to high with high rhythm, press forward and move the ball quickly,” said Guardiola.
“There is no question of underestimating Milan. We know that they are a team that can knock us out as they creates chances, defends well and are strong on the counter-attack. We are not a side which can hold out for very long defensively and so if Milan dominate the possession then there is something that we are doing wrong.”
At the weekend Carles Puyol was rested in the 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao but is expected to return to the starting lineup against Milan and it could again be at left-back like in the first leg with with first choice Eric Abidal waiting for a liver transplant.
He said Barcelona will have their typical attacking approach.
“Our plan is the same as normal, to go out to try and win and play our football while at the same time aware that we are up against an excellent side. I’m sure that they are going to be tight at the back and wait to counter-attack us,” he said.
“This is the most important match so far this season for us and while it is always important not to concede, this time it is more so than ever.
“I am ready to play wherever the coach decides and I’m just happy to help the team. Playing on the left is not my ideal position but that is the way it is and we are playing one of the top sides in Europe so you have to go out and enjoy it.”
It will also be a big night for former Barca player Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who returns after a disappointing spell in Spain.
“He is one of the best strikers in the world, difficult to defend one-on-one and he can shoot from distance and so we will try and make sure he gets the ball as little as possible,” said Puyol.

Barcelona have clicked into form at just the right time according to striker Pedro Rodriguez but he feels they need to be wary of AC Milan on Tuesday and of conceding an away goal.

The reigning World, European and Spanish champions did not have it all their own way in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie at the San Siro where a defensively strong performance from Milan kept Barca’s prolific forward line at bay and the match ended 0-0.

It guarantees a highly-charged Nou Camp for the second leg where Barca are favourites having already finished above the current Serie A leaders in the group stage of this competition but a goal for Milan would make it difficult for them.

“This is the most important game up to now in the season and hopefully we will do enough to qualify for the semi-finals. It is going to be a tough game and we cannot be too confident against Milan because they have great players. We will see what happens and hopefully with the help of the fans it will work out well,” said Pedro.

“We are going through our best spell of the season. We are confident and physically strong which is necessary at this key point and we will try and win everything and then see where we end up.

“Even if we are dominating the game against Milan we cannot relax because they can score a goal at any moment and they are not an easy side to beat.”

Domestically Barca have dropped points on their travels but a run of eight straight wins in the league including a 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao at the weekend has seen them reduce the gap with leaders Real Madrid to six points.

Messi has spearheaded the recovery and now has 56 goals in total so far this season while he set a new Champions League record in the last round with five goals in a 7-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

It has been an injury plagued campaign for Pedro who came on as a substitute at the San Siro and is slowly rediscovering his eye for goal.

“I feel fine and I don’t know why I am not having the luck at the moment which is what I need. I have had a lot of injuries over the last few months which have affected my level and the most important thing right now is to support my teammates. We need to keep winning and I’m sure I will start getting the goals,” said Pedro.

Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol both began the game with Bilbao on the bench so that they will be fresh for the Milan game while Cesc Fabregas is also expected to play after overcoming a shoulder injury.

Milan who drew away to an in-form Catania 1-1 on Saturday have a long injury list which is expected to include Mark van Bommel but in attack Alexandre Pato is due to travel.

It will be a special match for Zlatan Ibrahimovic who returns to the Nou Camp after a big money move in the summer of 2009 turned sour with a much publicised falling out with coach Pep Guardiola and he signed for Milan a year later.

Lionel Messi kept up his pulsating scoring form with his 36th league goal from the penalty spot as Barca kept up the pressure on Real Madrid a with a 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao.

Afterwards coach Pep Guardiola singled out his defence for praise.

“We were very strong at the back and much better than we have been for a long time, if not we would have been in a lot of trouble as this was one of the toughest games that we had left. The match was decided by the quality of the players,” he said, while looking forward to the final of the King’s Cup between these two sides next month he added: “it is going to be a very good spectacle and we will need to be strong again as they will push us all the way.”

Earlier Cristiano Ronaldo hit two as Real beat Osasuna 5-1 and he now 37 goals, but trails the Argentine overall with Messi scoring nine more with 55 in total.

Karim Benzema sent Real on their way with a delightful volley in the opening minutes and further goals followed from Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain.

While Osasuna threatened a brief comeback after the break through a Juan Francisco ?Nino’ header, Ronaldo struck again after 69 minutes and Higuain, with his second, wrapped up the scoring.

A minute from the end, Osasuna substitute Roland Lamah was dismissed for a second yellow card as his team’s six-match unbeaten run came to an end on the day that coach Jose Luis Mendilibar had extended his contract for another year.

“We scored from the first chance that we had with a goal which was out of this world and the second was also fantastic,” said Real coach Jose Mourinho.

“We adapted well against a tough side like Osasuna and we continued to play our attacking play which involved looking for our strikers. Even when we conceded the goal we knew how to respond and did not panic at 3-1. It was a good performance by us.”

At Camp Nou, Barca went ahead five minutes before the break through Andres Iniesta and then, following the restart, Messi scored after Cristian Tello was felled in the box.

Athletic had less than 48 hours to prepare for the match following their 4-2 victory over Schalke in the Europa League and they made several changes to the side leaving out valuable players like Fernando Llorente and Iker Muniain. Guardiola admitted this made a difference.

“This Athletic side is amazing and so is their trainer (Marcelo Bielsa). We had the advantage although Bielsa will not accept that his players did not have enough rest. I love to watch this Athletic side on the television,” he said.

Guardiola claimed he would not keep players in reserve with the second leg of their Champions League tie coming up against AC Milan following the 0-0 at the San Siro last Wednesday.

Even so Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol found themselves on the bench.

Defender Jon Aurtenetxe headed a Gerard Pique effort off the line but a goal for Barcelona was on the cards and it arrived through Iniesta after 40 minutes.

Known for crucial goals rather than a regular scorer he smashed the ball into the roof of the net after being supplied by Messi.

Tello was causing problems for the Athletic defence and he was felled by Javi Martinez in the penalty area after 57 minutes with Messi firing in Barcelona’s second from the spot.

Muniain, who came on at half time, went closest to pulling a goal back, when he rounded keeper Victor Valdes but Pique cleared on the line.

Malaga’s Champions League hopes suffered a blow as they lost 2-0 at home to Real Betis.

Zaragoza moved off the bottom of the table with a 2-1 victory over Sporting Gijon who are now in last place on goal difference with Racing Santander who were beaten 1-0 by Granada.

Real Madrid may have steadied the ship after two consecutive draws with victories in la liga and Europe, but now enter what could be a crucial month of April with...

Real Madrid may have steadied the ship after two consecutive draws with victories in la liga and Europe, but now enter what could be a crucial month of April with a tricky away trip to Osasuna, who beat Barcelona recently.
After Barcelona beat Sevilla a fortnight ago, Barca coach Pep Guardiola declared that there was no way his side could win the league but that was followed by two late free-kicks from Santi Cazorla and Marcos Senna for Malaga and Villarreal respectively which earned both sides a draw against Real.
A sense of trepidation at the Bernabeu was eased though by a 5-1 thrashing of Real Sociedad and then in mid-week Karim Benzema hit his second brace in a matter of days as Real took a big step towards qualifying for the Champions League semi-finals with a 3-0 away victory over Apoel Nicosia.
The gap at the top is down to six points and Real have some big games ahead of them starting with sixth-placed Osasuna and then they also have to face Valencia, the Madrid derby with Atletico and the el clasico against Barcelona, all in April.
Osasuna have been one of the big surprises this season and have just one defeat in nine games in a run which also included a defeat of Barcelona, only their second of the campaign.
“The pressure is on them although they are used to playing with it. They need to win and we will do all that we can do to play well and ensure that the points stay at home,” said Osasuna captain Patxi Punal.
“It is always a big motivation to play against a big side and we are up against the leaders Real Madrid. If we do get a good result then that will be an important boost for us to finish higher up the table.”
Barcelona, who now face Athletic Bilbao, have also hit form and Lionel Messi in particular who has 12 goals from his last six games. They have won their previous seven games in the league although they were held to a 0-0 draw away to AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Athletic have had an excellent season under Marcelo Bielsa but their league form has suffered recently due to the demands of an impressive run in the Europa League which includes the defeat of Manchester United. They are going to be further hampered as the match at the Nou Camp comes only 48 hours after their clash with Schalke 04.
Only a few weeks ago Valencia looked fairly secure in third place but the race has really opened up following back-to-back defeats and they are now level on 47 points with Malaga with a tough local derby against Levante ahead. Malaga meanwhile are at home to Real Betis.
Espanyol are looking to bounce back against Villarreal after Malaga came from behind to beat them last weekend.
Below them is the Madrid derby between Atletico and Getafe who are tied on 39 points along with Sevilla who entertain Mallorca.
At the foot of the table Zaragoza take on Sporting Gijon and Racing Santander play Granada while elsewhere Real Sociedad are in action against Rayo Santander.
