  • Barcelona aim to extend Henry contract

As Barcelona stumbled through its final year under Frank Rijkaard one of the players receiving most criticism was the expensive arrival for Arsenal Thierry Henry who had to constantly answer to comparisons between his form at the Camp Nou and his previous displays at Arsenal. The Frenchman though has weathered the storm and has been one of the key players this season and now the club are looking to keep him at the club after his present contract expires. The 31-year-old has always been a highly sort after quality in the Premiership for his performances at Arsenal and so there have been no shortage of suitors if he chose to turn his back on Catalunya but that now seems unlikely with him enjoying his football and the club riding high in the league and the Champions League. Barca are believed to have turned down an offer from Manchester City who have been watching Henry's progress closely. The interest though has prompted Barca to look at extending his current deal for three more years and at the same time they have issued a hands off warning to City who since their failure to sign Kaka have turned their attention to the world's most talented player Lionel Messi. "He is not for sale and it is not a question of money, he is happy at Barcelona and he reflects our style of football," responded Barca president Joan Laporta.
  • Guardiola refuses to get carried away

It was only a week ago that fear was running through the infrastructure of Barcelona that after such an impressive run where Pep's team knocked over all in front of them, that the wheels were starting to come off and that all that good work would be undone. That feeling though was borne out of alarmists and the fact that at the Camp Nou everything is either perfect or a disaster.

A good win against Athletic Bilbao in the league and the destruction of Lyon in Europe and once again optimism has returned with even president Joan Laporta describing the football as a work of art. Fortunately though Guardiola in his methodical way is refusing to be distracted by the praise and is continuing to work as hard as ever.

"We know that we are not even near a perfect team, the players know that they are not perfect because in the first 20 minutes in Lyon we were out of Europe, it is a very fine line, everyone knows this is a business and that a few days ago there was a crisis and that now we are going to win the Champions League," he said.

"With the 63 points we have they are not sufficient to be champions, we have to get a lot more and against very good teams. We have to forget the games that we have played and concentrate on the next, Madrid have a game a week and it is better for them, they will get a lot of wins and with just one game a week they have the chance to rest.

"With the strength though of Barcelona we are capable of achieving a lot but if we drop our level then we will have a lot of problems."
